オバマ大統領の広島訪問決断に先立つ巧みな翻訳
オバマ大統領の広島訪問決断に先立つ巧みな翻訳
(1 In ) Japan we have a saying: “jewel beetle colored statement.”
日本には「玉虫色の声明」という言葉があります。
This refers (2 to ) the buprestidae family of beetles that appear (3 in ) a variety of different colors depending (4 on ) what angle you view them from, and means a vague statement that can be interpreted in many different ways.
玉虫は見る角度によりさまざまな色に見えることから、いろいろと解釈できるあいまいな声明を意味します。
Before the G7 Ise-Shima Summit held this May, a meeting of G7 foreign ministers was held (5 in ) Hiroshima in April.
今年5月のG7伊勢志摩サミットに先立ち、4月に広島外相会合が開かれました。
Some officials pointed (6 out ) that the Japanese translation of the “Hiroshima declaration” adopted there was incorrect.
そこで採択された「広島宣言」の日本語訳は誤訳ではとの指摘が関係者からありました。
The original English text is (7 as ) follows:
英語の原文は次の通りです。
The people (8 of ) Hiroshima and Nagasaki experienced immense devastation and human suffering (9 as ) a consequence of the atomic bombings and…
The Japanese translation released (10 by ) the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is as follows:
外務省が発表した、日本語訳は次の通りです。
広島 及び 長崎 の 人々 は、原子爆弾投下 による 極 めて 甚大な 壊滅 と 非人間的な 苦難という 結末 を 経験 し……
The translated part in question (11 from ) the original text is “human suffering.”
問題にされたのは、原文の「human suffering」の訳です。
Translated literally this is “jinteki kutsuu” (human suffering) but it was expressed (12 as ) “hi-ningentekina kunan” (inhuman suffering).
文字通りに訳せば「人的苦痛」ですが「非人間的な苦難」という表現になっています。
The original English text plays down the damage done (13 in ) consideration of the position taken by the USA and other nations that possess the nuclear deterrent who believe that the atomic bombing hastened the end (14 of ) the war.
英語の原文は原爆が戦争の終結を早めたとするアメリカなど核保有国の立場に配慮し、被害を抑えた表現をしています。
Some people have pointed (15 out ) that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ translation emphasized the tragedy (16 in ) consideration of the sensibilities of the Japanese people who, as the only nation having suffered (17 from ) an atomic bombing have a deep aversion to nuclear weapons
外務省の訳は唯一の被爆国で核アレルギーのある日本人の心情を考慮し、悲惨さを誇張したと指摘する人もいます。
Expressions whose nuance differs (18 between ) English and Japanese have been seen before.
英語と日本語のニュアンスが異なる表現はこれまでも見られました。
(19 For ) instance, “The United Nations.” Originally it was a term used to refer to the allied nations (20 during ) World War Two. And the same name is used even now that it has become an international organization.
たとえば、「The United Nations」。本来第二次世界大戦の連合国を指す言葉でした。 そして 国際機関 と なった 現在 も、 同じ 名前 が 使われて います。
However, in Japanese, to distinguish it (21 from ) the translated term “Rengoukoku” used during the war, the name “Kokusai Rengou” was used (22 after ) the war.
しかし、日本語では戦時中に使われた「連合国」と区別して、戦後は「国際連合」が使われました。
There are also cases where the reverse is true. “Ianfu” is generally translated (23 in ) Japan as “comfort women,” but some countries use the term “sex slaves” to emphasize the criminality (24 of ) the practice.
逆のケースもあります。従軍慰安婦は日本では一般的に「comfort women」と訳されますが、犯罪性を強調するために「sex slave」を使用する国もあります。
