This summer volunteer trip signified wonderful new changes. We are now an officially government recognized Non-profit organization. Also, for the first time another volunteer, Akiko Okano, traveled with me to Tondo, Manila. Equally exciting was that we met a new contact for our work with the children there, Olive Dealagdon, the teacher at Hapilan Daycare Center.
This trip was very short, only four nights, three days. We accomplished a lot in that time. Saturday, morning, we had the opportunity to meet and feed 100 children in the Hapilan slum. Then we dropped off clothing donations with the daycare center to be distributed to the students and their parents. Saturday afternoon we visited some warehouse stores to buy new clothing and classroom material for the students. Sunday, we got up at 5am and distributed 100 McDonald's breakfast sandwiches to the homeless sleeping along the streets of Manila. February 2017, we are hoping to save up enough to buy textbooks for all the students, a rice cooker big enough to prepare 50 meals and set up a delivery schedule for brown rice, vegetables and beans so the children can have breakfast before school. If you would like to join us, the next tentative date is February 9th ~ 16th, but this can be changed according to volunteer requests. I will rent a condo that sleeps up to seven and we can share the rent between the volunteers. (Japanese translation provided by Atsuko Murakami) This year's trip to Manila was very successful. I accomplished laying a foundation for future trips through social contacts. I was able to build trust with the local people with the help of a volunteer Tagalog interpreter. We handed out food to hundreds of children sleeping on the street and in back alleys. AlohaEigo was also given free use of a classroom in the Happyland, Tondo slum where I will be teaching again for two weeks in August of 2016. If you would like to join me as a volunteer Japanese or English teacher, I will do my best to guide you. It is very very hard and dangerous work, but the reward is these children will remember you the rest of their lives as someone who cared. All the funds raised for future trips come from lesson fees paid by my students here in Japan.
During Golden Week in Japan, The Philippines also have spring vacation. So, preschool was not in session this volunteer trip. I instead tutored one-on-one 32 neighborhood children of all ages from two to 13. Lessons were adjusted to the level and age of students. Happyland resident teacher Olive and I helped the children do crafts, such as creating coasters out of plastic cups and making handprints with watercolors. AlohaEigoNPO provided the lesson material as well as lunch for each child and some parents after their lessons. I also interiewed mothers about life in the slum, but the audio was unfortunately too poor to share. During this visit, I was able to start delivery of bottled water for classroom use. The school is built on the Manila landfill, so no fresh water is available. This year, our goal is to raise money to repair the roof to the school. During during rains, the room floods making it useless. Our next trip will be in December, 2017. If you would like to join us, please send an email. (Japanese translation provided by Atsuko Murakami) This 10 day trip to Tondo we expanded our influence into two new areas. Because of an emergency need in the Aroma slum, due to a devastating fire that left 600 families without their already few possessions and meager sleeping space, our focus was on relieving suffering here.
Once again, we had a Japanese volunteer join us for four days of the trip. The children in Manila are familiar with Japanese anime, and so get very excited meeting Japanese people, because so few travel to this area. This was our first trip up the notorious Smokey Mountain made completely of Manila's garbage. 200 families live here and struggle even more than those living in neighboring slums. Until recently, the children did not even have clothing to protect their bodies from the poison in the soil. Over the years, we have had a challenging time finding honest charity partners in The Philippines. On this trip, we met Loving Street Children, an energetic sincere young group with a similar vision to ours. We are going to work together to build a school on top of Smokey Mountain for foreign and local volunteers to help the children prepare for a better future. For the first time also, we had four wonderful cash donors who contributed a total of 90,000円, allowing us to feed far more people than ever before. Thank you Akiko Okano, Hiromi Takahashi, Kazuko Takahashi, and Mimi Yokota. (Japanese translation provided by Atsuko Murakami) |
