During Golden Week in Japan, The Philippines also have spring vacation. So, preschool was not in session this volunteer trip. I instead tutored one-on-one 32 neighborhood children of all ages from two to 13.
Lessons were adjusted to the level and age of students. Happyland resident teacher Olive and I helped the children do crafts, such as creating coasters out of plastic cups and making handprints with watercolors. AlohaEigoNPO provided the lesson material as well as lunch for each child and some parents after their lessons. I also interiewed mothers about life in the slum, but the audio was unfortunately too poor to share.
During this visit, I was able to start delivery of bottled water for classroom use. The school is built on the Manila landfill, so no fresh water is available. This year, our goal is to raise money to repair the roof to the school. During during rains, the room floods making it useless.
Our next trip will be in December, 2017. If you would like to join us, please send an email.
