English terms are generally used (4 for ) colors like gray (haiiro), pink (momoiro) and orange “daidai.” Japanese terms are generally used (5 for ) the colors kiiro (yellow), chairo (brown), and murasaki (purple).

The word “iro” (color) is generally added (6 after ) “ki” and “cha;” as in “kiiro” and “chairo.” When a color word is used as an adjective, an “i” or “no” is added (7 after ) the color word; as in “akai kutsu” (red shoes) or “chairo no fuku” (brown dress).
