Since Japanese products are exceptionally safe and accurate, people all (1 ) the world consider the “Japanese Brand” to be reliable.

However, problems are created when issues of incorrect labeling of food products and sloppy construction work come (2 ) light within Japan.
しかし、日本国内では食品の不正表示や建築の手抜き工事が発覚して問題になることがあります。
I have also been negatively affected (3 ) such matters. Many years ago I had been living (4 ) a room in a newly constructed block of apartments when, after a short while, water soaked (5 ) the wall.
私もその被害にあったことがあります。以前、新築マンションに住んで間もなく、壁に水がしみてきました。
When I called the construction company, the person (6 ) charge came immediately to apologize. 業者に電話をするとすぐに責任者がやってきて平謝りしました。
They looked (7 ) it and discovered that a loose joint in the water pipe on the floor above was causing the water leak.
調べると上階の水道管のジョイントがゆるんでいて、それで水がもれたことがわかりました。
Before long repairs were carried (8 ) and the water stopped. I asked the man in charge why such a thing had happened.
間もなくして修理工事が行われ水は止まりました。私はどうしてこんなことが起きたのか責任者に聞きました。
He said, “In fact, I am an employee of a small construction firm (9 ) this area. In short, we do subcontracted work (10 ) the company who constructed the apartment block.” 彼は「実は、私はこの地域にある小さな工務店の者です。つまりこのマンションの施工業者の下請けです」と言いました。
And he continued: “To tell you the truth, in order to make as much (11 ) a profit as possible, the construction company gets subcontractors to carry (12 ) work as cheaply as possible. そしてこう続けました。「正直言いますと、施工業者は利益をできるだけ多く取りたいために、私たち下請けに安い費用で請け負わせます。
I always think we could build a much more attractive house (13 ) the same price if we were ordered to do so directly.”
私どもに直接注文していただければ同じ価格でもっとすばらしいものがつくれるのに、といつも思います」。
“Even though you say that, customers purchase houses (14 ) well-known companies despite the high-prices charged because they feel it gives them peace (15 ) mind,” I muttered. Then he continued as follows: 「そうはいっても、客は高くても安心感でよく知られたメーカーから買うんだよね」と私がつぶやくと、彼はこう続けました。
“But it is actually small firms like ours who build the houses bought because (16 ) safety concerns.” 「でも、その安心感で買った家を実際につくっているのは私たち零細業者なんですよ」。
(17 ) I was watching TV that night, a commercial for the company that built the apartment I lived (18 ) was aired.
その夜テレビを見ていると、私の住むマンションの施工業者のコマーシャルが流れました。
I began to feel conflicted when I realized that the fee (19 ) this commercial had been included in the price of my building and that we had paid (20 ) this.
このコマーシャル代も価格に組み込まれ、私たちが払ったのだと思うと複雑な気持ちになりました。
