She went to Britain to learn English, but…

When I went (1_________) Britain last month I had an opportunity to speak (2_________) a young Japanese girl who came (3_________) Britain to study English.    先月、私はイギリスへ行った。そのとき、英語を勉強しに来ていた日本人の若い女性と話をする機会があった。 

I asked her (4_________) English, "You are staying here one year? You must be able to speak quite well now then, right?"
「一年いるんですか。それじゃ、ずいぶん英語を 話せるようになったでしょう？」と私が英語で聞くと、

She replied (5_________) Japanese,  彼女は日本語でこう答えた。
"I am embarrassed to be asked that."  「そう言われると、つらいんです」。

"Why?"  「なぜですか？」

To summarize her remarks, she could not speak English (6_________) all although she thought she would learn to speak the language if she came (7_________) Britain.      彼女の話を要約するとこうだ。彼女は英語がまったくできなかったが、イギリスに来れば英語を話せるようになると思ってやって来た。

But the reality was different.  だが、現実は違ってい た。

Even although she attends school, she can't understand (8_________) all what the teachers are saying.  実際は英語学校へ行っても、先生が何を言っているか全くわからない。

The same thing happens (9_________) her host family.
ホームステイ先の家庭でも話すことができないから、親しくもなれない。

She couldn't become friendly (10_________) the family nor make British friends as a matter (11_________) course.    むろん、イ ギリス人の友達はできない。

​As she came (12_________) Britain alone, she feels lonely and wants to find useful living information, so she naturally speaks (13_________) Japanese with whom she can communicate.        
一人でやって来た彼女は、淋しいし、生活する上での情報も欲しいからどうしても意思の疎通ができる日本人と話すようになる。

There are many Japanese those like her who came (14_________) all over Japan.   
彼女のような人は日本全国からたくさんやって来る。

(15_________) all, they gather and speak (16_________) Japanese everyday.
結局、日本人同士で固まり、毎日日本語で話すようになるという。

"I came here to study English, but I mastered the Kansai and Tohoku dialects," she laughed and continued,
「英語を学びに来たんですが、関西弁や東北弁を習得してしまいました」と彼女は苦笑し、続けた。

"Since I have been here a year now, my family and friends believe I would be able to speak English fluently.
「一年もイギリスにいますから、家族や友人は私が英語をぺ らぺらに話せると思っています。

I can't return (17_________) Japan now, so I am extending my stay (18_________) taking part-time work."
このままでは帰れないんですよ。それで、アルバイトをしながら滞在をのばしているんです」。

"And then?"   「それで？」、

 "As I can't speak English, I am working (19_________) a souvenir shop for Japanese tourists. 
​「でも英語ができないから、日本人観光客相手のお土産屋で働いているんです。

(20_________) a result, I have mastered all the Japanese dialects (21_________) English."
それで、英語の代わりに日本全国の方言すべてを覚えてしまったんです」。
