Foreign Student (hereinafter FS): I often watch sumo (1 ) TV. When a yokozuna (grand champion) is defeated, spectators throw their cushions (2 ) the dohyou (ring). Isn’t that insulting?
留学生(以下、留): 僕はよくテレビで相撲を見ます。横綱が負けると観客は座布団を土俵に投げますが、あれはひどいですね。
Teacher (hereinafter T): It’s not an insult, but an act that expresses admiration (3 ) the winner. Since this is dangerous it is prohibited, but (4 ) fact, the practice continues.

FS: I see. Why doesn’t the victorious wrestler express his joy (5 ) a smile or a triumphant pose?

留:同じモンゴル出身の横綱白鵬は昭和の大横綱大鵬の記録を破り史上最多優勝となりました。彼にはそのような批判はなかったのですか。
T: At the hatsubasho tournament in 2015, the bout (12 ) oozeki (wrestler of second highest rank) Kisenosato was very close, and a “monoii” was raised.
先:2015年初場所で大関稀勢の里ときわどい勝負となり、「物言」がつきました。
In sumo, (13 ) the referee, five judges are watching the bout around the dohyou, and they can raise a hand to object (14 ) the referee’s decision. This is called a monoii.
相撲では、行司の他に5人の審判員が土俵の周りで見ていて、行司の判断に異議の手を挙げることができます。これを物言いと言います。
When it is difficult to judge which wrestler is the winner, a rematch is called.
どちらが勝者かわからないと判断された場合は、取り直しとなります。

The Sumo Association criticized Hakuho, but (15 ) he apologized, the controversy died down.
相撲協会は白鵬に抗議しましたが、白鵬が謝罪したため、騒動は収まりました。

T: There was a bout (19 ) 1969, which was dubbed “the great misjudgment of the century.” This occurred in a bout (20 ) Taiho – who Hakuho respects – and the senior grade wrestler Toda.
先: 「世紀の大誤審」といわれる相撲が1969年にありました。それは、白鵬が尊敬する大鵬と平幕の戸田の取り組みで起こりました。
At that time Taiho had 45 consecutive victories (21 ) his belt and was attempting to match a record of 69 consecutive wins made (22 ) Futabayama.
大鵬はそれまで45連勝をしていて、双葉山の持つ歴代最多記録の69連勝に挑んでいました。
The referee signaled that Taiho had won, but a monoii was raised and the judges decided that Toda was the winner, thus bringing Taiho’s record of consecutive wins (23 ) an end.
行司の軍配は大鵬にあがりましたが、物言いがついて審判は戸田の勝ちとし、連勝記録はこのようにして止まってしまいました。
A photograph (24 ) the newspaper the next day showed Toda’s foot outside the ring before the end (25 ) the bout.
翌日の新聞の写真では、戸田の足が先に土俵の外に出ているのが映し出されていました。
The Sumo Association came in (26 ) some heavy criticism and as a result decided to introduce video cameras as evidence in adjudicating bouts (27 ) the next tournament onwards.
相撲協会は厳しい批判を浴び、その結果次の場所から勝負判定の参考にビデオを導入することにしました。
This misjudgement was the impetus (28 ) the adoption of video footage in sumo – ahead of other sports.
この誤審が、他のスポーツに先駆て相撲にビデオを取り入れるきっかけとなったのです。
FS: How did Taiho react?
留:大鵬はどんな気持ちだったんでしょうね。
T: Whenever he was asked (29 ) this, Taiho said, “It was my fault that I put in such a performance as a yokozuna.”

On later hearing these remarks the winner, Toda, said, “I’m comforted (30 ) his warm words.”
